This is an original vintage poster produced by The Museum of Modern Art in New York on the occasion of Andy Warhol’s Landmark Retrospective Exhibition spanning his entire career held in 1989. The featured work, a self-portrait based on a photograph, is one of a series of eight monumental 6ft x 6ft silkscreen canvases done in different saturated color combinations in 1967. A time when Andy Warhol was at his creative peak and his stellar rise to fame and celebrity was coming into fruition, and he was becoming increasingly aware that his own persona fascinated people almost as much as his art. The self-portrait presents him in a mesmerizing contemplative gaze with one side of his face in shadow, curtained off, expressing a separation between his public persona and his hidden private self. This vintage poster of the work from this seminal MoMA exhibition is a high quality lithograph in colors printed on thick art paper that renders the deep saturated colors, red primarily, and fine details, including the animated surface of the hidden shadow side with great fidelity to the original self-portrait.
